Kedarnath Trek / Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is one of the holiest Hindu shrines of shiva on earth is one amongst the 12 jyotirlingas. According to Legends, the Kedarnath temple was initially built by the Pandavas and is situated in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Due to extreme weather circumstances, the temple is only opened for the general public for 6 months from April to November and at extreme winters the deities of Kedarnath temple are brought down to Ukhimath and for the next 6 months, the worship is conducted over there.

is one of the most sought after and regular trek in India and one of the best treks in Uttarkhand. People from every age category can be seen hiking every day there. It is situated at the Rudraprayag district of Uttarkhand, follow the mentioned route Rudraprayag - Kund - Guptakashi - Sonprayag - Gaurikund and from there the 16 km trek begins. Although, it is safe to travel but still if someone is unable to trek themselves, there are carrying services available. Pilgrims from all around the country gather every year in massive amounts to praise the Lord of Destruction and for the utmost satisfaction and fulfillment in terms of both comfort and divinity. There are other treks that are nearby and feasible like Tungnath trek via Kund - Gopeshwar road.
is a magnificent trek. Direct bus services are available, you can bring your own car as well. But the best way to explore the glorious and amazing mountainous valleys of Garhwal Himalayas is through a bike ride. Bike riding in Uttarkhand is the most awesome experience given the best of the nature that it offers.
Either you can stay at Guptakashi if you want to travel via helicopter ride in kedarnath, or you must stay at Sonprayag if you have to trek to Kedarnath Temple.
Downhill trek and return time to dehradun can be increased or decreased according to the climate conditions and other natural reasons.
The journey starts at Dehradun. You could bring your own vehicles or you could rent it out here in Dehradun. The Kedarnath journey is feasible both via bikes and cars. From Dehradun take the Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar Garhwal Road adding up to 160 km of journey. From Srinagar, take the Rudraprayag route which is roughly 30 km away. From Rudraprayag to Kund is 35 km and from Kund to Guptkashi is 8 km.
The maximum altitude at Guptkashi is around 1319 meter. The valley is occupied with lush green surroundings which are totally mesmerizing to lay your eyes on. Teen Dhara is one of the most popular breakfast points in between the tour, this place is called Teen Dhara because 3 water springs are situated here and are on the Rishikesh - Devprayag highway. After that, the most suitable place for lunch is Nagrasu in the district of Rudraprayag where you can get the local pahadi delights.
You can stay at Guptkashi or Phata which is 13 km away if you want to visit the Kedarnath temple via helicopter. Helicopter services are available from Guptkashi and Phata but you have to make prior arrangements like 1-month pre-booking. 5-6 days prior bookings can be arranged but for much higher prices comparatively. Guptkashi and Phata are advisable to stay only if you want to take helicopter rides, other it is advisable to end your day 1 journey at Sonprayag which is additional 17 km from Phata. You can easily get Hotels in Sonprayag which are affordable and at reasonable prices.
Start your day very early, recommended time 3 am to avoid standing in large queues because you have to travel through public transportation as there is no parking for private vehicles in Gaurikund considering it is a small place. The yatra (trek) starts from over there. The distance from Gaurikund to the holy Kedarnath temple is exact 16 km which is easy initially but becomes steep, uphill and tough as it progresses.
For old people or pilgrims who are diagnosed with issues which unables them to walk the steep 16 kms trek which is not at all easy instead harsh with not so good roads there are other options to travel as well like horses and pony hire in Kedarnath, palanquins hire in Kedarnath. Considering the length and toughness of the trek, they come equipped with a good deal. There are water and food facilities along with washroom facilities are available throughout the trek and their prices increases as you go further.
It generally takes 6-7 hours to reach to the Kedarnath temple given you are in good shape and are having good stamina. Once you reached the temple you will have to wait for your turn in the long queue waiting in front of you. It will take you another 3-4 hours to enter the temple and praise the lord. After that you are free to enjoy the natural enchantments and mysterious weather at the Kedarnath premises. You may visit the inhabitated caves which represent the centuries old traditions of our Indian culture which are nearby. Local hotels and camps are available to stay the night. Make sure you get some quality rest before the next day's downhill trek.
Make sure you get up early to avoid the heavy number of pilgrims coming down to Gaurikund form the temple. Try to get off as early as 4 am. This way you will get down to Gaurikund by 5 hours. You have to get back to your respective places where you stayed whether Guptkashi or Sonprayag. Then follow the same route to get back to Dehradun.
