About Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is the 27th state of the Republic of India. It was formerly known as "Uttaranchal" and was formed in the year 2000 after it was separated from the larger state of Uttar Pradesh. Uttarakhand is widely regarded as Devbhoomi (Land of the Lords) because of its historic and rich association with Indian mythology. The name Uttarakhand is derived from two Sanskrit words - Uttara (North) and Khanda (Land), joined together they translate to "Northern Land". The capital city and the largest city of Uttarakhand is Dehradun. Uttarakhand is located at the foothills of Himalayas and shares international boundaries with China in the north and Nepal in the east. It is also connected to Himachal Pradesh from North West and with Uttar Pradesh from the South.

The official language of Uttarakhand is Hindi while Garhwali and Kumaoni are also popular and can be heard in different parts of Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand comprises 13 districts and they have been divided into 2 groups - Kumaon and Garhwal. Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, and Pithoragarh come under Kumaon Division while Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi. Uttarakhand has also been stated and mentioned in history books as part of Kuru and Panchal kingdoms. Even in Hindu mythology, Uttarakhand has said to be the part of Kedarkhand and Manaskhand. It is also said that the great sage - Ved Vyas, composed the epic of Mahabharata in here. The state has been garnered with the presence of great sages of ancient times and there are signs of Shaivism, Buddhism and other religious practices in different parts of the state.

The people of Uttarakhand are known for leading a rich, diverse, simple and honest lifestyle. Although, there are many cities in Uttarakhand that are now equipped with ultra-modern amenities, facilities, and crowds from different parts of the country but the people of Uttarakhand are still bonded with their traditional values and cultural practices. Apart from the major inhabitants (Garhwali & Kumaoni), there are many ethnic groups such as Jaunsaris, Bhotias, Thakurs, Bhoksas, and Raji. Uttarakhand is one of the most historically rich and composed places in India with Proto-Australoid, Mongoloid, Dravid and Nordic races.

Uttarakhand is the home to the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites of Char Dham - Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Kedarnath is also part of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India.
